They bought it on OfferUp. Here’s what you keep.

In 2026 the sale is a parking-lot handshake, not a prepaid label. OfferUp Help says the company doesn’t charge fees or take a commission from in-person transactions. Nationwide shipping shut on 23 Sep 2025. The 12.9% / $1.99-minimum formula still printed on the Shipping Policy is a retired-receipt decoder — it is not a toggle on a new listing. Cash in the hand is the current keep. This is not a clone of Mercari’s 10% on item + buyer-paid shipping and not Depop processing vs Facebook local, where Meta never prints a local $0 cell. OfferUp prints the no-commission sentence. Same $40 sticker, Stripe processing vs this handshake: Depop vs OfferUp.

Independent — not affiliated with OfferUp. Figures were read from official public Help on 28 Aug 2026 (America/Chicago). Live fetch: Nationwide shipping ending and About free listing limits returned article HTML. What is OfferUp?, Getting paid, Promote Plus, OfferUp Premium, Buy single listings, and the Shipping Policy were read from the official help.offerup.com article text (some URLs sit behind a Cloudflare challenge on automated fetch — we do not invent a percent to fill a blocked page). Gap: individual 1-day / 3-day promote dollars and extra-listing dollars are in-app, category-dependent, and not a public table. Empty paste = $0. Do not invent a 2026 shipping percent: new listings cannot ship. Confirm live copy in your app. Planning model only — not tax, legal, or accounting advice. No affiliate IDs.

Keep card (local cash vs retired shipping)

Default: $50 sticker. Local is the 2026 product (no commission on the in-person sale). Retired shipping applies the official leftover formula: 12.9% of item, $1.99 minimum, postage paid by the buyer so it is not in the seller-fee base. Promote / extra listing / off-platform app cuts are paste-only. Empty = $0.

Local keep (2026 product)
$50.00
Retired shipping keep
$43.55
Shipped service fee (12.9% / $1.99 min)
$6.45
Local minus retired (same sticker)
+$6.45

$50.00 local vs $43.55 retired shipping

Local has no OfferUp commission on the in-person sale. Retired shipping takes 12.9% of item ($1.99 floor). Planning only.

Two products, one sticker

People still Google “OfferUp seller fees” as if the app were Mercari with a driveway option. That search is stale. After 23 Sep 2025, a new post is local pickup. You meet, they inspect, they pay, they leave with the item. OfferUp is not in the money path on that handshake.

“OfferUp doesn’t charge fees or take a commission from your in-person transactions.”
What is OfferUp?

Getting paid is blunt: when you sell in person, you get paid in person, on the spot, after inspection. Cash is the method they call safest. App rails (PayPal, Zelle, Venmo) are “convenient, but they do carry some risk.” Checks, gift cards, wires, and crypto are on the do-not-accept list. Whatever you choose, the dollars are yours to collect — OfferUp is not running a payout for that meetup.

That is why local keep on a $50 sticker is $50 before COGS, drive time, or a promote you actually bought. We do not subtract a phantom processing percent. If an off-platform app actually billed you, paste that receipt. Empty means $0.

Nationwide shipping is over. The 12.9% page is a leftover.

Official timeline from Nationwide shipping ending (fetched live 28 Aug 2026):

The OfferUp Shipping Policy and How shipping works for sellers still print the old seller cut for a shipped order:

As a seller, you’re responsible for paying a service fee when you ship items sold via OfferUp. The fee is 12.9% of the item’s final price (excluding shipping costs) with a minimum fee of $1.99. You’ll see the service fee dollar amount when you accept a buyer’s offer. This fee is automatically deducted from the final sale amount before any money is deposited into your account.
— Shipping Policy / How shipping works for sellers

Buyers paid postage and sales tax on that product. Sellers ate USPS overages if the prepaid size was wrong. Ship-within-5-calendar-days or the order auto-cancelled. None of that is a 2026 listing choice. This card uses 12.9% / $1.99 only so you can decode an old payout or see what the retired product used to take versus cash in the hand. Gap: we will not invent a current shipping percent, a “ship yourself via OfferUp chat” rate, or a third-party label markup and call it an OfferUp fee.

Same-sticker math (official leftover formula, no invented percents)

Sticker Local keep Retired 12.9% / $1.99 min Shipped keep
$15.00 $15.00 $1.99 (min; 12.9% would be $1.94) $13.01
$50.00 $50.00 $6.45 $43.55
$100.00 $100.00 $12.90 $87.10

$1.99 / 0.129 ≈ $15.43 is where the percent overtakes the floor. Below that, the minimum bites. Buyer postage is out of this table because official copy puts shipping on the buyer, not in the 12.9% base.

What still costs money — and is not a sale percent

“Free to list, free to sell locally” is true until you blow a category cap or buy a boost. Those are app-store charges, not a cut of the handshake.

Free listing limits (official table)

From About free listing limits (fetched live 28 Aug 2026). Caps refresh on the first of the month. Unused free listings do not roll. Posting in a capped category does not eat the 200 “all other” bucket.

CategoryFree listings / month
Cars & Trucks1
Motorcycles1
Appliances15
Cell Phones & Accessories15
Furniture25
Jewelry & Accessories25
Tools & Machinery25
All other categories200 combined

Gap: Buy single listings says the price per extra post varies by category and is shown in the app when you run out. Listing subscriptions are “a discounted price per listing,” also category-specific, no public dollar grid. This page will not invent $1.99 / $3.99 / $4.99 extras. Paste the charge that actually hit your app store, or leave extra listing empty.

Promote vs Promote Plus vs Premium

Jobs and Services listings are a different product (Services plans start at $75 / month on the Services listing subscription article). They are not For Sale keep and are out of this card.

Meetup cost that is not a platform fee

OfferUp wants the exchange at a Community MeetUp Spot — lit, public, often camera-covered, sometimes a police-station lot. That is safety, not a fee schedule. Gas, no-shows, and the hour in the parking lot are yours. They do not belong inside 12.9% and they do not belong inside “$0 commission.” Put true COGS and drive time in the hub calculator cost fields if you want leftover after work.

Local Facebook Marketplace is the closest cousin, and even that page has to say Meta does not print a local $0 selling-fee cell: Depop vs Facebook Marketplace. OfferUp does print the sentence. Same $40 vs US Depop processing: Depop vs OfferUp. Use that distinction; do not copy a 10% shipped closet onto a sofa in the driveway.

Not Mercari, not eBay, not a 10% closet

Official sources (28 Aug 2026)

Gaps we will not paper over: 1-day / 3-day promote dollars; extra-listing dollars by category; listing-subscription package dollars; any 2026 “how to ship on OfferUp” percent; Venmo / Zelle / PayPal Goods & Services rates (paste a receipt); Cloudflare challenge on some help URLs at fetch time — we cite the official article, we do not guess.

Drop local vs retired shipping into the hub calculator

  1. Open the seller-fee calculator (hub: /seller-fees/).
  2. Local meetup: referral 0, payment 0, flat 0. There is no published in-person commission to paste. If you bought a promote or an extra listing, park that dollar under other costs — do not invent a %.
  3. Retired shipping (old receipt only): 12.9% on item, floor $1.99. Leave shipping out of the fee base (buyer paid postage on that product). Do not use this as a 2026 listing preset.
  4. True COGS, gas, and pack belong in cost fields. “Keep” here is platform take-home, not profit after the Craigslist-era hour in a parking lot.

Closest local cousin: Depop vs Facebook Marketplace (processing vs a meetup Meta does not print $0 for). Same $40 vs Depop processing on a printed no-commission handshake: Depop vs OfferUp. Current shipped closet: Mercari fees explained (10% on item + buyer-paid shipping — a live product, unlike OfferUp shipping).

FAQ

Does OfferUp take a seller commission on a local meetup in 2026?

No. “What is OfferUp?”: no fees, no commission on in-person transactions. Getting paid: money changes hands at the meetup. New posts cannot ship after 23 Sep 2025. Optional promote / extra-listing charges are app-store lines, not a percent of the sale. Last checked 28 Aug 2026.

Can I still ship on OfferUp, and what was the seller fee?

Not on new listings. Shipping option gone 23 Sep 2025; stripped from idle existing posts 21 Oct 2025; no plans to bring it back. Leftover policy: 12.9% of item (excluding shipping), $1.99 minimum, deducted from payout; buyer paid postage and tax. That is a receipt decoder. This page will not invent a 2026 shipping percent.

On the same $50 sticker, what do you keep local vs retired shipping?

Local $50.00 with empty optional pastes. Retired shipping $43.55 after $6.45 (12.9% × $50). A $15 sticker hits the $1.99 minimum (12.9% = $1.94), keep $13.01. Buyer postage is out of the seller-fee base on the official wording.

What optional OfferUp charges are not a sale percent?

Promote Plus $19.99 / mo or $99.99 / yr. Individual 1-day / 3-day prices are in-app only — not invented here. Extra listings vary by category. Premium is $7.99 / mo and buyer-side. Paste a receipt onto this sale or leave empty. Do not amortize a subscription into a fake %.

How is this different from Mercari, eBay, and Facebook Marketplace local?

Mercari still takes 10% of item + buyer-paid shipping. eBay is category FVF + per-order on a shipping marketplace. Facebook local is a meetup, but Meta Help does not print a local $0 selling-fee cell (see Depop vs Facebook Marketplace). OfferUp prints the no-commission sentence and officially retired nationwide shipping.
