Etsy vs Amazon seller fees (same SKU take-home)

One checkout total. Two published stacks. This is a compare of what you keep after Etsy’s US listing + transaction + processing versus Amazon’s category referral — not a claim that Amazon “takes 15%” on everything, and not a rewrite of the Etsy fee-stack guide.

Not affiliated with Etsy or Amazon. Figures were read from official public pages on 27 Aug 2026. Both platforms change rates, and Amazon’s referral is category-specific. Confirm the live % and flats in your Etsy Payment account and Amazon Seller Central (fee preview / Estimated fee per unit sold) before you price a SKU. Planning model only — not tax, legal, or accounting advice. No affiliate IDs on this page.

Same SKU card

Defaults: Etsy US stack from Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy and processing table. Amazon referral default is the published Home and Kitchen 15% row ($0.30 minimum) on sell.amazon.com/pricing — change it to the category you actually fetched or see in Seller Central.

Etsy (US bank / Etsy Payments)

Offsite Ads is 15% under the $10k / 365-day threshold or 12% at/above it, only on attributed orders, capped at $100. Leave 0 for organic. Full stack: Etsy seller fees explained.

Amazon (US referral)

FBA is extra. This card does not invent a size/weight fulfillment fee. Paste the FBA line, Individual plan $0.99/item, or media $1.80 closing fee if that SKU actually has them.

What each marketplace actually publishes

Do not blend these into one “marketplace tax.” Etsy charges a small listing whether it sells, then a flat transaction percent plus a country-based processing cut. Amazon charges a referral percent that changes with the fee category, with a dollar minimum on most rows, plus a selling-plan cost and optional FBA.

Amazon US referral is a table, not a slogan

Amazon’s public pricing page states that referral fees vary by product category: you pay a percentage of the total price (list + shipping + gift wrap) or a minimum amount, whichever is greater. A product’s fee category may not match the storefront category the buyer sees. Examples copied from that table on 27 Aug 2026 — not a complete schedule:

Published category (US)ReferralMinimum on that row
Home and Kitchen15%$0.30
Toys and Games15%$0.30
Sports and Outdoors15%$0.30
Consumer Electronics8%$0.30
Computers8%$0.30
Automotive and Powersports12%$0.30
Clothing and Accessories5% at $15 or less; 10% from $15.01–$20; 17% above $20$0.30
Amazon Device Accessories45%$0.30
Everything Else15%$0.30

Media (books, DVD, music, software, video) is listed at 15% plus a $1.80 closing fee per item. Several other rows are split-rate (furniture, jewelry, electronics accessories). If your ASIN is not one of the rows above, open the live table — do not guess. Source: How much does it cost to sell on Amazon? (sell.amazon.com/pricing) (fetched 27 Aug 2026).

Selling plans on the same page: Individual $0.99 per item sold, or Professional $39.99 per month. Those are account fees, not referral. The card treats Professional as $0 extra per unit unless you amortize the month into the optional field (or paste $0.99 for Individual).

FBA vs FBM: the same pricing page lists Fulfillment by Amazon as an optional extra and sends you to Amazon’s Revenue Calculator and the Estimated fee per unit sold column. We did not copy a size/weight fulfillment table into this guide, so no invented “small standard $X” FBA number. Merchant-fulfilled compare = referral (+ Individual $0.99 if that is your plan). FBA compare = referral + the fulfillment amount you paste.

Worked example: $40 SKU (planning math)

Same checkout: $40 item, $0 shipping, no gift wrap, ignore sales tax for the sketch. Etsy: US bank, listing assigned to this sale, organic (Offsite Ads 0%). Amazon: fee category Home and Kitchen 15%, Professional plan, no FBA pasted.

Etsy out

Amazon out (Home and Kitchen)

On this organic $40 Home and Kitchen SKU, Etsy keeps $1.75 more than Amazon referral-only. Gross-up to keep a $34 floor: Etsy list ≈ ($34 + $0.20 + $0.25) ÷ (1 − 6.5% − 3%) = $38.07. Amazon list = $34 ÷ (1 − 15%) = $40.00.

Flip cases on the same $40, still official percents only:

When Etsy keeps more vs when Amazon keeps more

No hype — the stack and the category decide, not the brand of marketplace.

Volume, ads, returns, and storage are outside this SKU snapshot. Amazon Professional $39.99/month only belongs in the optional field if you divide it by expected units. Etsy has no monthly subscription in the default stack (Etsy Plus / Pattern are optional products; we are not putting them on every sale).

How to use the profit calculator with this compare

  1. Open the seller-fee calculator. Run the Etsy preset, then replace processing with your bank-country row if you are not US.
  2. Duplicate the scenario with Amazon’s referral % from Seller Central for that ASIN — not a blog’s “standard 15%.”
  3. Add FBA or Individual $0.99 only as other/flat if you actually pay it. Leave Offsite Ads at 0 unless you are stress-testing an attributed order.
  4. Put real COGS + pack in cost fields. This page’s “keep” is platform take-home, not profit after materials.
  5. Confirm a settled order in each dashboard. Both companies can change this.

Selling the same SKU on TikTok Shop is a third stack (referral + promotions + fulfillment) — do not reuse these Etsy or Amazon percents there. See TikTok Shop fees explained.

FAQ

Does Amazon always take 15%?

No. Referral is by fee category on sell.amazon.com/pricing. Home and Kitchen is a published 15% example with a $0.30 minimum; Consumer Electronics is a published 8% example. Confirm the ASIN in Seller Central.

What does Etsy take on a US sale of the same SKU?

$0.20 listing, 6.5% transaction on item + shipping + gift wrap, and US processing 3% + $0.25. Offsite Ads 15% or 12% only when attributed, capped at $100. Last checked 27 Aug 2026 on Etsy’s legal fees policy and help articles.

Does the compare include FBA?

Only if you paste a per-item amount. We did not fetch a size/weight fulfillment table into this page, so no invented FBA dollars. Amazon’s pricing page treats FBA as optional and points to the Revenue Calculator.

Should I use list price or what the buyer paid?

Use the same checkout total on both sides: item + shipping + gift wrap (the base both platforms publish). Coupons you fund still come out of keep on top. Tax: Etsy US transaction excludes sales tax; processing can include it — your payment account wins over this sketch.

Is this tax advice?

No. Planning math only. Not affiliated with Etsy or Amazon. Confirm fees in each seller dashboard; they can change this.
