Free to list is not free to pay out. Vestiaire’s US self-list sentence, opened 28 Aug 2026 (HTTP 200):

“Listing your items is free on Vestiaire Collective. Once you make a sale, a Selling Fee of 12%* will be deducted from the final price of your sale.”

Deducted. Then a separate 3% processing line (min $3) covers “external processing costs of your transaction.” On $400 that is $48.00 + $12.00 = $60.00 house, leftover $340.00. You still shot the listing and dropped the prepaid label.

Consignment Help inverts the verb on purpose:

“You will earn up to 80% of the item price.”

That 80% is a headline keep, not the $400 row. The official USD consignment image (Help attachment, read 28 Aug 2026) pays 65% on $150–$999. $400 × 0.65 = $260.00. House 35% = $140.00. They handled pick-up, expert photography, descriptions, market-rate pricing, storage, and outbound.

RealStyle FAQ, same day’s live fetch:

“Our commission structure is based on your sales volume. We pay between 20% – 70% based on your item’s value.”

We pay. Clothing $300–$749 at Trendsetter is 60% of Net Selling Price → cash $240.00. House remainder $160.00. They authenticated, shot, set the price, listed, and shipped. Intake was in-home, in-store, or prepaid ship-in — still not a closet listing fee.

Quote all three as “commission” and you mill the wrong machine. A headline that says “Vestiaire takes 65%” has inverted the consignment keep. A headline that says “The RealReal takes 60%” has inverted the clothing keep. A headline that says “12% vs 65%, so consignment costs five times more” has compared a take to a keep and ignored the extra 3% processing. The honest house-cut trio on this $400 row is $60 vs $140 vs $160, not $48 vs $260 vs $240.

1. Flip three verbs before you rank the leftovers

On $400, USD, empty extras, Trendsetter cash:

• Vestiaire self-list take = 12% × $400 + 3% × $400 = $60.00 → leftover $340.00.
• Vestiaire consignment keep = 65% × $400 = $260.00. House remainder $140.00.
• TRR clothing keep = 60% × $400 = $240.00 cash. House remainder $160.00.
• Self-list vs consignment gap = $340.00 − $260.00 = $80.00 — photography, copy, price, pack you did not hand over.
• Two-consignment gap = $260.00 − $240.00 = $20.00 — not a coupon. Different legal machines, different clocks, different auth stories.

2. $400 sits in three published bands — not a decoder dump

$400 is above Vestiaire’s $83 self-list cliff, so the closet rail is 12% + 3%, not $10 + $3. $400 is inside the consignment USD $150–$999 cell, so that rail is 65% keep, not the $60 house floor and not the 80% / 85% ceilings. $400 is inside RealStyle’s clothing $300–$749 cell, so the TRR rail is 60% keep, not the 20% basement and not the 70% ceiling. Percents are Help / RealStyle. Dollars are our multiplication. Neither Help nor RealStyle prints these worked keeps. At $800 the two consignment leftovers tie at $520.00 — Vestiaire’s 65% sold-price keep meets TRR’s 65% clothing keep — and the self-list rail is still $680.00 because 12% + 3% never became a keep grid. That tie is coincidence of two different verbs, not proof the houses are the same product. RealStyle’s jewelry table is a different printed grid (faster top band). Clothing is the TRR rail here. 3. Sale price is not Net Selling Price

Vestiaire self-list 12% + 3% sits on the final price of the sale. If you listed $400 and it sold at $400, the house is $60. Vestiaire consignment 65% sits on the sold price printed on that USD image. Help does not rename it Net Selling Price. Indexed The RealReal consignor terms still define Net Selling Price as sold price after discounts and promotions, with tax and shipping already out. If The RealReal lists a dress at $500 and it sells after markdown at $400, clothing 60% multiplies $400. Vestiaire self-list lets you set the sticker; The RealReal generally does not hand you that button. Do not pretend a $500 tag still pays 60% after they sold it at $400.

That is also why this page is not a 50-state tax engine. Tax is already outside TRR NSP. Vestiaire Help already says selling fees include VAT, GST, US sales tax, and equivalent consumption taxes where applicable. Empty tax on all three rails is how the official bases are written, not a table of state rates we declined to invent.

Buyer-paid $15 authentication (en-US Help, Authenticated Shipping) sits on the other side of Vestiaire checkout. Dropping $15 into seller keep would invent $400 − $48 − $12 − $15 = $325 — a cell Selling Fees does not print. Buyer service fee 5–28% (min 5) is the same mistake with a larger number. Leave both off the seller card.

4. The $80 gap is labor. The $20 gap is a different house.

$340 vs $260 is not a gift from the closet. It is the cost of doing intake yourself on Vestiaire. Consignment Help still says they arrange the appointment, pick-up, expert photography, pitch-perfect descriptions, market-rate pricing, safe storage, and shipment. Eligibility is printed: based in the EU, UK, or US; at least five luxury or designer items; very good condition. Unsold return is €20 per item — a consignment cost self-list does not print.

$260 vs $240 is not “Vestiaire consignment beats The RealReal by five points.” One keep sits on sold price with a 24-hour / 5-working-day clock. The other keep sits on Net Selling Price, generally waits until the 15th of the next month, and buys in-house authentication (RealStyle: more than 90 experts plus AI on dye, fabric, and stitching; indexed FAQ copy: 150+). This card will not mint an hourly photography wage, and it will not mint a cash-now buyout RealStyle left unprinted. Run labor, authentication risk, markdown risk, and payout delay as separate lines in your own head.

A third machine — still a closet take, still you listing — is Poshmark’s 20% of listing, already paired against TRR clothing keep on Poshmark vs The RealReal ($320 vs $240). Do not paste that 20% onto this $400 as if Vestiaire self-list were Poshmark, and do not paste TRR 60% onto a listing you photographed on Vestiaire.
